What is a router? A router is basically a device that forwards data packets along networks to their proper destinations (aka routing). The internet itself is a global network connecting millions of computers, without a router these computers wouldn't be able to communicate to each other.

Why do you need a router? With a broadband router you can set up a LAN (local area network) or a WLAN (wireless local area network) between multiple PCs and let them all connect to the internet at the same time. This way you don't have to get additional internet subscription services from your ISP for every computer you own. That's why most home users will buy a broadband router, this way they will be able to connect 2 or more computers to share one internet connection.

Wired broadband routers have multiple router ports on the front or back of the device into which you plug each one of your computers, and one router port is used to plug in your broadband modem. Depending on what type of internet connection and modem you have you can also choose a router with phone or fax ports. A wired broadband router also supports NAT (network address translation) which basically means that all your computers connected to the router will share a single IP address, and your router will also provide a build-in firewall.
Wireless broadband routers
have the same functions as a wired router (they also have router ports) but they have an antenna on top and no cables running to the PCs when the router is set up. People will not be able to join your wireless network because of it's embedded levels of security (Wi-Fi protected access (WPA) and wireless MAC adress filtering). Plus a wireless broadband router can be turned "invisible" so that your wireless network cannot be found by other wireless clients.

Normally both wired and wireless routers offer an equal level of performance. Wired broadband routers are usually cheaper but wireless broadband routers offer a great mobility advantage.
